According to the new Law about Local Authorities, with the code name «KALLIKRATIS» since January 1, 2011 the Municipalities of Nea Makri and Marathon as well as Grammatiko and Barnabas Communities were merged in a new Municipality by the historic name of Marathon. The seat of the new municipality is Marathon. The new City of Marathon, fifth largest Municipality of Attica in area and among the largest in area municipalities in the country, has a total area of 222.170 hectares and according to 2001 census, has a total population of 26.899 inhabitants. It belongs to Attica Region and is located on the northeastern coast of the Attica prefecture.
