The preparation of a guide about the city, part of a more comprehensive surveying project for the cultural inventory of Karditsa Perfecture, which is attempted here, hampered for years to the lack of systematic record and study of the structure, of the historical development and contemporary character of Karditsa. The City Museum of Karditsa municipality aims to fill this gap.
The first reliable information about the existence of Karditsa goes back to the 15th century and comes from Ottoman administrative sources. The word «karditsa» is considered as an alteration of the Slavic word «Gradista», which means «bordered, fortified place”, but without any existence of a fortress construction in the area.
