The large artificial lake is a result of the construction of Pournari I dam, which is the second largest dam in Greece (Mornos dam is the largest one), the second largest in the Balkans in volume and retains Arachthos water by checking the river flow, that passes near the town of Arta a few kilometers away in its natural flow to Amvrakikos bay.

The lake is a home for many varieties of fishes such as carps, brianas, wild trout, eels. They find shelter for many birds like mallard ducks, plovers etc.
