Marathon reservoir was created by constructing a dam located in Attica at the junction of Charadros and Barnabas streams. Works for the construction of the dam began in 1926 and completed in 1929. The dam has been made by concrete and is entirely covered by Pentelic marble, which gives it uniqueness worldwide.
Due to its proximity to Athens, Marathon reservoir functions as an auxiliary intake source in cases of emergency. Its water supply is done by Iliki and Mornos reservoirs and through Yliki Aqueduct and Mornos – Yliki Aqueduct.
